Friction Torque Limiter for PTO Shaft

Friction Torque Limiter

PTO Friction Torque Limiter – Automatic Slip Clutch Protection for Farm Machinery

A PTO friction torque limiter (also known as a friction slip clutch, friction disc overload clutch, or spring-loaded safety coupling) delivers continuous, maintenance-free overload protection for PTO-driven implements. When operating torque exceeds the adjustable spring pre-load, the friction plates begin to slip, absorbing energy and preventing harmful torque spikes from reaching the gearbox or driveline. Once the overload passes, the clutch re-engages automatically with zero operator intervention. GBC offers an extensive range spanning 800 Nm to 3000 Nm, with disc diameters from Φ120 to Φ163 mm, engineered for demanding Australian conditions.

Key Features & Advantages

⚙ Automatic Re-engagement

No bolts to replace – the clutch slips under overload and grips again the moment torque returns to safe levels.

🔧 Adjustable Slip Point

Spring pre-load can be fine-tuned to match the limiter precisely to your implement.

🕐 Zero Downtime

Continuous slip protection means the operator never stops to replace a broken component.

💪 Heavy-Duty Construction

Heat-treated hub, hardened pressure plates and sintered friction linings for sustained durability.

🎯 100+ Series Variants

Flanged yoke, flanged spline, compact disc and Belleville spring variants for any installation.

✅ Multi-Spline Compatibility

1 3/8″ Z6, Z21, 1 3/4″ Z6 and Z20 profiles to match any PTO shaft standard.

How a Friction Torque Limiter Works

Friction plates are clamped between a hub and pressure plate by pre-loaded springs (coil or Belleville disc). During normal use, the clamping force generates enough friction to transmit full drive torque. When an overload occurs, torque overcomes the friction force and the plates slip, converting excess kinetic energy into heat. This limits the torque transmitted downstream. As soon as the obstruction clears, the plates grip again and full power transfer resumes seamlessly.

Common Agricultural Applications

🌿 Disc Mowers & Conditioners

High-inertia cutting discs encounter frequent stone strikes. The friction clutch absorbs each spike without halting the machine.

🌾 Fertiliser Spreaders

Clumped or damp fertiliser causes momentary blockages. Continuous slip prevents gear stripping.

⚙ Feed Mixers & TMR Wagons

Frozen feed or foreign objects generate shock loads. The limiter protects the mixer auger and gearbox.

💪 Post-Hole Diggers

Hitting rock underground sends violent torque into the driveline. The clutch slips and re-engages once free.

Installation & Maintenance

  1. Disengage PTO and shut down the engine before handling driveline components.
  2. Mount on the implement shaft, ensuring spline profile matches.
  3. Secure with the push pin or retaining clip.
  4. Connect the flanged yoke or spline to the PTO shaft universal joint.
  5. Set initial spring pre-load using a torque wrench, adjusting bolts evenly.
  6. Grease all nipple points and test at idle speed before increasing RPM.

⚠ Tip: Inspect friction linings every 500 hours. Replace when worn below 2 mm to maintain accurate calibration.

Selection Guide

  • Operating Torque: Set slip point 20–30 % above nominal running torque.
  • Overload Frequency: Friction types excel where overloads occur often.
  • Connection Type: Flanged yoke (FF), flanged spline (FFS/FFVS), Belleville (FFT/FFVT), or compact (FCS).
  • Disc Diameter: Larger discs (Φ160) offer higher capacity and better heat dissipation.

Quality Assurance & Support

Produced in ISO 9001:2015 facilities with CE compliance. Sintered linings from European suppliers ensure consistent friction across Australian temperature extremes. 12-month warranty and nationwide delivery. Contact: sales@australia-drive.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I adjust the slip torque?

Tighten or loosen clamping bolts evenly. Increasing bolt torque compresses springs further, raising the slip threshold.

What happens when friction linings wear out?

Effective slip torque decreases. Replace discs when thickness drops below 2 mm.

Can I convert from a shear bolt to friction limiter?

Usually yes, provided spline and dimensional envelope match. Contact GBC for a cross-reference.

Is there risk of overheating during sustained slip?

Prolonged continuous slipping generates heat. If persistently overloaded, stop and clear the obstruction.

What is the difference between FF, FFV, FFS and FFT?

FF = flanged yoke with coil springs. FFV = alternate yoke geometry. FFS/FFVS = flanged spline. FFT/FFVT = Belleville disc springs for compact profile.
