Standard Profile for Agricultural Splines

The diagrams below illustrate the internationally recognised involute spline profiles used across our PTO adaptor range. Understanding these profiles — from the 6-spline 1 1/8″ (Profile A) through to the metric 8-42×36×7 (Profile N) — is essential for accurate part selection.

Key Features & Benefits of Our PTO Adapters

⚙ Precision CNC Machining

Every adaptor is CNC-turned to tight tolerances, guaranteeing a snug spline fit with minimal backlash. This eliminates vibration and premature wear under sustained rotary loads.

💪 Heat-Treated Alloy Steel

Forged from 42CrMo or equivalent chromium-molybdenum alloy steel and through-hardened to 58–62 HRC on the spline surfaces, delivering exceptional fatigue resistance for demanding field conditions.

🔄 Extensive Spline Coverage

From 1 1/8″ Z6 to 1 3/4″ Z20 and metric 8-32×38×6, the catalogue covers virtually every female-to-male conversion encountered in modern farming — no obscure adaptor left behind.

✅ Drop-In Replacement

Designed as a direct substitute for OEM adaptors from leading European and North American manufacturers. No modifications to your existing PTO shaft or gearbox are required.

🛡️ Anti-Corrosion Finish

A phosphate or zinc-plated surface treatment shields each adaptor against rust and chemical exposure, extending service life even in humid coastal or irrigated environments.

📈 Cost-Effective Fleet Solution

Stocking a set of PTO adaptors is far cheaper than purchasing multiple dedicated PTO shafts. Ideal for dealers, hire companies, and mixed-brand farming operations.

Compatibility — Tractors, Implements & Industrial Equipment

Our PTO shaft adaptors conform to the ISO 500 and ASAE S203/S204 standards that govern agricultural PTO connections globally. This means they work with virtually any tractor or implement fitted with a standard splined PTO stub, including but not limited to:

Category Compatible Brands / Equipment
Tractors John Deere, Case IH, New Holland, Kubota, Massey Ferguson, Fendt, Deutz-Fahr, CLAAS, Valtra, McCormick, Kioti, Mahindra
Mowers & Slashers Finishing mowers, flail mowers, rotary cutters, slashers from Howard, Sitrex, AgriMaster, Del Morino
Tillage Rotary hoes, cultivators, power harrows — Celli, Maschio, Kuhn, Falc
Hay & Forage Round balers, square balers, tedders, rakes — Vicon, Krone, McHale, Lely
Pumps & Generators PTO-driven water pumps, alternators, compressors for irrigation and on-farm power generation
Industrial Wood chippers, post-hole diggers, cement mixers, grain augers, feed mixers

Installation & Usage Guide

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Identify spline profiles — Measure or visually confirm the female spline on your implement input shaft and the male spline on the tractor PTO stub. Count the number of teeth and measure the outside diameter.
  2. Select the correct adaptor — Cross-reference your female and male spline sizes against the part number tables above. Verify the overall length suits your coupling gap.
  3. Clean both shafts — Remove dirt, old grease, and rust from the PTO stub and the implement input shaft using a wire brush and solvent.
  4. Apply grease — Coat the adaptor’s female bore and male spline teeth with high-quality lithium-based EP grease (NLGI Grade 2).
  5. Slide the adaptor on — Insert the tractor’s PTO stub into the adaptor’s female end. Rotate slightly until the splines engage, then push fully home.
  6. Connect to the implement — Slide the implement’s yoke or input shaft over the adaptor’s male end. Ensure the locking pin or collar engages securely.
  7. Check for free rotation — Rotate the assembly by hand to confirm smooth, binding-free movement before starting the engine.

Safety Precautions

⚠️ Warning: Rotating PTO shafts are extremely dangerous. Observe all safety precautions at all times.

Always disengage the PTO and switch off the engine before installing or removing an adaptor. Ensure that PTO safety shields are in place before operation. Never wear loose clothing near a spinning PTO shaft. Keep bystanders and children at a safe distance. Re-grease the adaptor every 8–10 operating hours or at the start of each season.

Typical Application Scenarios

🌾 Broadacre Cropping

Farmers operating rotary hoes, seed drills, and grain augers often encounter spline mismatches when pairing implements from different manufacturers. A PTO adaptor lets you run a Kuhn power harrow behind a John Deere tractor without any shaft modification.

🌿 Viticulture & Horticulture

Vineyards and orchards rely on compact tractors (often Kubota or Kioti) paired with Italian or Spanish implements that use metric spline profiles. The adaptor converts metric 8-32×38×6 to standard 1 3/8″ Z6 for seamless power transfer to mulchers and sprayers.

🐄 Livestock & Dairy

PTO-driven feed mixers, silage wagons, and manure spreaders frequently require 1 3/4″ Z20 connections while the tractor outputs 1 3/8″ Z21. An adaptor bridges the difference, keeping feed schedules on track without expensive driveline swaps.

🏭 Construction & Civil Works

Post-hole diggers, trenchers, and PTO-powered generators used on rural construction sites benefit from quick spline conversion — especially when the same tractor must drive multiple attachments in a single workday.

PTO Adaptor Selection Guide

Choosing the right PTO adaptor is straightforward when you know four key parameters. Use the checklist below before placing your order:

Parameter How to Determine Why It Matters
Female Spline Size Count the teeth and measure the bore diameter on the implement’s input shaft or yoke. Determines which adaptor female end fits your implement.
Male Spline Size Count the teeth and measure the OD of the tractor’s PTO output stub. Determines which adaptor male end fits your tractor.
Overall Length Measure the gap between the tractor PTO stub end and the implement yoke entrance. Too short and the splines won’t fully engage; too long and the shaft may bind at tight turn angles.
RPM & Torque Check the tractor’s PTO speed (540 or 1000 RPM) and the implement’s power demand. High-torque applications may require a larger spline profile for safe power transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a PTO adaptor and a PTO extension?

A PTO adaptor converts one spline profile to another — for example, changing a 1 3/8″ Z6 female to a 1 3/4″ Z20 male. A PTO extension, on the other hand, keeps the same spline profile on both ends but adds length between the tractor and the implement. If your spline sizes already match but the connection is too short, you need an extension, not an adaptor.

Can I use a PTO adaptor at 1000 RPM?

Yes. Our adaptors are engineered for both 540 RPM and 1000 RPM applications. However, at 1000 RPM the torque transferred can be significant, so always ensure the spline size is rated for the horsepower involved. For high-power applications above 150 HP, we recommend the larger 1 3/4″ spline adaptors.

How do I know if my tractor uses a Z6 or Z21 spline?

Count the number of teeth (splines) on the PTO stub. A Z6 profile has 6 wide, evenly spaced teeth, while a Z21 profile has 21 narrower involute teeth. Both are commonly found on 1 3/8″ diameter stubs. Z6 is the traditional North American standard; Z21 (also designated as a 20-spline in some literature) is prevalent on European tractors. When in doubt, check the tractor’s operator manual or send us a photo.

Does using an adaptor reduce PTO shaft life?

Not when properly installed and lubricated. Our adaptors are machined to the same tolerances as OEM components, so the connection is just as strong as a direct spline coupling. Regularly greasing the adaptor’s splines and ensuring the locking mechanism is secure will maintain full driveline integrity over the long term.

What is the 8-32×38×6 spline profile?

This is a metric involute spline designation commonly found on European agricultural equipment. The notation breaks down as: 8 teeth, 32 mm minor diameter, 38 mm major diameter, and 6 mm module. It is widely used by Italian, German, and French implement manufacturers as an alternative to the imperial 1 3/4″ Z6 standard.

Can I order a custom adaptor with a non-standard spline?

Absolutely. We offer full OEM and custom manufacturing services. If your application requires a spline profile not listed in our standard catalogue — such as 8-42×48×8 female to 1 1/8″ Z6 male, or a non-standard overall length — please contact us with your drawings or specifications. Minimum order quantities apply for custom runs.

How often should I regrease a PTO adaptor?

We recommend applying a fresh coat of lithium EP grease every 8–10 operating hours, or before each use if the adaptor sits idle for extended periods. In dusty or wet conditions, more frequent greasing is advisable to prevent abrasive wear and corrosion inside the spline bore.

Customer Reviews

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Mark T.Toowoomba, QLD

Bought the 00.18.02B*D to connect my old Massey 1 3/8″ Z6 to a new Italian rotary hoe with Z21 input. Slid on perfectly, zero vibration after 40 hours of work. Saved me from buying a whole new driveline. Very happy with the machining quality.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sarah L.Griffith, ACT

We run a machinery hire business and keep a full set of these adaptors in stock. Customers return equipment in one piece, and we avoid having to supply ten different PTO shafts. The 00.18.07 series has been particularly popular — great build quality and the zinc plating holds up well.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ James R.Barossa Valley, SA

Our vineyard uses compact Kubota tractors with 1 3/8″ Z6 PTO paired with an Italian under-vine cultivator that requires 8-32×38×6. The adaptor made the conversion effortless. Solid steel construction and it hasn’t budged after an entire season of heavy use through wet clay soils.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ David K.Shepparton, VIC

Reliable adaptor that does the job well. I dropped one star only because the packaging could be improved — arrived loose in the box. But the adaptor itself is well machined and fits true. Reordered three more for our other machines.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tom H.Albany, WA

Running a 1 3/4″ Z20 to 1 3/8″ Z21 adaptor on our baler for a second season now. No wear visible on the splines at all. Fast delivery to WA and the pricing was fair for the quality. Will definitely purchase again.
