SD-Double Joint for PTO Shaft

SD-Double Joint – Compact Twin Universal Joint for Smooth PTO Power Delivery

The SD-Double Joint (double universal joint, double cardan joint, or twin U-joint assembly) combines two universal joints within a single compact housing with a centring yoke, producing a constant-velocity output that eliminates the speed fluctuations inherent in single U-joint designs. GBC offers both whole (DY) and welded (SDY) configurations across 12 sizes, ensuring compatibility with virtually any PTO shaft assembly used in Australian agriculture and industry.

Key Features

⚙ Constant Velocity Output

Two opposed U-joints cancel out speed variation, delivering smooth, pulse-free torque to the implement.

🔧 Whole and Welded Options

DY (whole) for bolt-on replacement; SDY (welded) for permanent integration into custom shaft assemblies.

🔄 Compact Twin Design

Shorter overall length than two separate U-joints with an intermediate shaft, saving driveline space.

🎯 12 Size Options

From compact Series 1 to heavy-duty Series 42, covering the full spectrum of PTO shaft categories.

🛠 Reduced Vibration

Smooth power delivery extends the life of bearings, gearboxes and implement drive components.

✅ Interchangeable Standards

Dimensions follow international PTO shaft standards for seamless OEM replacement.

How It Works

A double joint consists of two universal joints connected by a short centring yoke. The geometry ensures that the non-uniform angular velocity produced by the first joint is exactly corrected by the second, resulting in constant-velocity output. This principle is the same used in automotive drive shafts but adapted here for the higher torques and lower speeds of PTO applications. The centring mechanism keeps both joints perfectly phased regardless of the operating angle.

FAQ

When should I use a double joint instead of a wide angle joint?

Double joints are ideal for moderate angles (up to about 45°) where you want constant velocity without the cost of a dedicated CV joint. Wide angle joints are needed for angles above 45°.

What is the difference between DY and SDY?

DY (whole) joints are bolt-on assemblies for easy replacement. SDY (welded) joints are welded onto tube profiles for permanent custom shaft fabrication.

Are replacement bearing kits available?

Yes, cross-and-bearing kits for all series are stocked by GBC for fast replacement.
