Positioned between the tractor and the working parts, the agricultural gearbox converts PTO speed into the torque and speed required by the header, feed rolls, chopper drum, and thrower blower. In a silage machine, the gearbox typically performs three power splits:

🔧 On-site Installation Steps for Silage Gearbox
- 1 Clean mounting surface, ensure flange flatness ≤0.1mm/m.
- 2 Apply Loctite 515 flange sealant, mount gearbox and torque bolts crosswise (see torque chart).
- 3 Connect PTO shaft, ensure at least 50mm overlap on telescopic tubes and angle ≤8°.
- 4 Fill with GL-5 85W-90 to oil level plug, change after first 20 hours of operation.
❗ 10 Silage Gearbox Faults & Field Fixes
① Abnormal noise (periodic knocking)
Possible causes: pitting on teeth or excessive bearing clearance. Check oil for metal particles, replace if contaminated, contact GBC for bearing shim kit.
② Output shaft oil leak
Usually clogged breather or overfilled. Clean breather, check oil return; if seal worn replace with FKM oil seal (part GBC-S80S).
③ Housing overheating (>90°C)
Too much/little oil, or bearing preload too high. Adjust oil to middle mark, check and loosen locknut.
④ Header speed fluctuation
PTO universal joint worn or internal keyway sheared. Inspect driveline cross, disassemble input shaft.
⑤ Excessive vibration
Loose mounting bolts or deformed base. Retorque bolts, re-machine base if needed.
⑥ Cannot shift (some models)
Shift fork or synchronizer worn. GBC offers shift mechanism repair kit.
⑦ Gear tooth fracture
Usually metal fatigue or foreign object. Stop immediately, GBC offers strengthened blanks (18CrNiMo7-6) replacement.
⑧ Joint face weeping
Sealant aging. Clean and reapply high-strength anaerobic sealant.
⑨ Bearing cage broken
Overload beyond rating. Upgrade to heavy-duty roller bearings, GBC stock ships same day.

Water ingress. Check breather and seals, change oil, add anti-siphon tube.
