GBC WS/WSD Compact Cross Axle Joint: For high angles (up to 45°) in confined spaces. 11.2 – 1120 N·m General machinery, automotive, light industrial, steering linkages.
GBC WSS Small Telescopic Joint: High-speed capability with length compensation. 22.4 – 1120 N·m Precision machinery, control systems, agricultural PTO shafts.

Components

A universal cardan shaft is an assembly of several precision-engineered parts working in unison:

  • Universal Joints (U-Joints): Consisting of a cross-shaped journal and four needle roller bearings, these are the pivots that allow the shaft to operate at an angle.
  • Shaft Tubing: The main body of the shaft, typically made from high-strength steel tubing, designed to transmit torque over a distance.
  • Slip Yoke / Spline: A telescopic mechanism that allows the shaft to change length, accommodating movement in the driveline suspension or thermal expansion.
  • Flange Yoke: The component that bolts the cardan shaft to the driving and driven machinery.
  • Seals: High-quality seals protect the needle bearings from contaminants like dust and moisture, which is critical in Australian industrial and mining environments.

Our Commitment to Quality: The Foundation of Every Universal Joint

Quality is built into every component of a GBC cardan shaft.

  1. Material Integrity: We use high-grade forged steel for all yokes and universal joint crosses, providing superior strength and fatigue resistance over cast alternatives.
  2. Precision Manufacturing: All components are machined to exact tolerances using advanced CNC technology, guaranteeing perfect fit and smooth operation.
  3. Advanced Heat Treatment: Universal joint crosses and bearings undergo specialized heat treatment to enhance hardness and durability, ensuring they can withstand severe shock loads.
  4. Dynamic Balancing: Every GBC cardan shaft is dynamically balanced to G 16 specification (DIN ISO 1940) or better. This critical step eliminates vibration, protecting connected machinery and ensuring a long, reliable service life.

How to Select the Suitable Cardan Shaft?

Choosing the correct cardan shaft is crucial for driveline longevity and operational safety. Follow this systematic approach:

  1. Calculate Torque Requirements: Use the formula: Calculated Torque (Tc) = Service Factor (K) × Theoretical Torque (T). Your Tc must be ≤ the shaft’s rated Nominal Torque (Tn) or Fatigue Torque (Tf).
  2. Determine Operating Speed and Angle (β): The product of speed (n) and angle (β) should not exceed the maximum value for the shaft. For most industrial applications, keep n × β below 18000.
  3. Measure for Correct Length: For fixed shafts, measure flange-to-flange distance. For telescopic shafts, measure minimum and maximum working lengths.
  4. Consider the Environment: For corrosive environments, contact our team to discuss custom materials and coatings.

Installation Best Practices

  • Safety First: Always lock out and de-energize machinery before work.
  • Pre-Installation Checks: Clean mating flanges and verify pilot fit. Ensure alignment arrows on splines are matched for correct phasing.
  • Lifting and Handling: Use nylon slings around robust yoke sections. Never lift by the spline cover.
  • Bolt Torquing: Use only specified high-strength bolts (Grade 10.9) and tighten to the specified torque value with a calibrated wrench.
  • Guarding: Ensure all safety guards are in place and properly maintained after installation.

Maintenance and Lubrication Guide

A consistent preventative maintenance program is key to maximizing service life.

Lubrication Schedule:
  • General Use: Every 250 operating hours or 2 months.
  • Heavy/Wet Environments: Every 125 hours or monthly.
Recommended Lubricant:

Use a high-quality, lithium-based grease with extreme pressure (EP) additives, NLGI Grade 2. Do NOT use lubricants with Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2).

Procedure:

Clean grease nipples. Apply grease slowly until fresh grease purges from all four bearing seals of the U-joint. For slip splines, apply only 2-3 strokes.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

Symptom Potential Cause Recommended Action
Intense Vibration Worn U-joints, imbalanced shaft, worn carrier bearing. Inspect U-joints for play. Check for missing balance weights. Replace worn components and re-balance.
Loud “Clunking” Noise Excessive play in U-joints or spline due to wear. Immediate inspection and replacement are required to prevent driveline failure.
Squeaking at Low Speeds A dry or failing U-joint that has lost its lubrication. Lubricate immediately. If noise persists, the U-joint bearings are damaged and must be replaced.

Customer Testimonials

“We were replacing U-joints on our main ore conveyor every six months… After we switched to GBC’s SWC series shafts two years ago, we haven’t had a single failure. It’s reduced our conveyor downtime by at least 30%.”

Jack Wilson

Maintenance Supervisor

“The SWP shaft’s split-bearing design is a game-changer for our maintenance team. What used to be a four-hour job to pull a whole shaft is now a bearing swap in under an hour. The reduction in downtime has been phenomenal.”

James Taylor

Plant Engineer

“We had a persistent vibration issue in one of our prime movers… The team at GBC supplied a perfectly balanced replacement driveshaft. The vibration is completely gone. The driver’s happier, and we’re seeing better tyre wear.”

Liam Anderson

Fleet Manager
