Overview
Cartridge Bearing Units — Integrated Machine Frame Mounting

A cartridge bearing unit pre-assembles a UC-family insert bearing into a housing designed to be pressed or bolted into a bore machined directly in the machine frame, casting, or plate — eliminating the separate pillow block or flange housing as an external component. This reduces the overall machine envelope, lowers part count, and integrates the bearing position into the machine structure rather than bolting it onto the surface.

Two principal housing formats are available: flange cartridge uses a round pilot on the back of a square or rectangular flange plate to locate the unit concentrically in a machine bore; cylindrical cartridge uses a plain cylindrical OD that presses or slip-fits directly into a round bore without a flange plate. A third format — rubber-mounted cartridge and pillow block units — adds a vulcanised rubber element between the bearing and the housing to isolate vibration and absorb shock loads. Flange Cartridge Bearing Units

Pilot Register · Square Flange

Square or rectangular flange plate with a round precision pilot on the back face. The pilot locates the unit concentrically in a matching bore machined in the machine frame, and the flange bolts lock it in position. Available in setscrew, eccentric collar, concentric collar, and adapter sleeve locking styles; standard and medium duty ratings; metric and inch-based housing dimensions. Insert bearings are interchangeable with equivalent UCFL / NAF / UEF / UKF flange units for the same bore size.

Cylindrical Cartridge Bearing Units

Round OD · Press Fit

Plain cylindrical OD housing that locates directly in a round bore machined in the machine frame or plate. No flange plate and no external fasteners at the bearing position — the cylindrical housing is held by an interference fit, a grub screw into the bore wall, or a circlip. Gives the most compact axial envelope and the smallest external footprint of any mounted bearing format.

Rubber-Mounted Anti-Vibration Bearing Units

Vibration Isolation · Shock Absorption

Rubber-mounted bearing units vulcanise a natural or synthetic rubber element between the bearing outer ring and the housing shell. The rubber element acts as a compliant mount that absorbs shock loads, attenuates vibration transmitted between the shaft and the machine frame, and accommodates small angular and radial misalignment that would otherwise impose edge loads on the bearing. Used wherever the drive generates impact, vibration, or shock — such as vibratory screens, agricultural machinery, conveyor drives over rough terrain, and any position where bearing life on a rigid mount is unacceptably short.

Why Cartridge Units
Design Advantages
Cartridge bearing units reduce machine envelope, eliminate external housing fasteners from the machine surface, and maintain bearing position accuracy through successive bearing replacements.
📐

Reduced Machine Envelope

The bearing housing is recessed into the machine frame rather than bolted on its surface. The overall machine length at each bearing position is shorter than an equivalent pillow block or flange unit arrangement, allowing tighter shaft spacing or a more compact machine design.

🎯

Pilot Register for Accurate Location

The round pilot on the back face of the flange cartridge housing locates the unit in a matching bore to h7/H7 fit tolerances. This eliminates bolt-hole clearance as a source of radial offset and ensures repeatable reinstallation after bearing replacement without re-alignment.

🔄

Same Insert as Standard Units

UC-family insert bearings in UCFC200 are the same inserts used in UCF200 flange units and UCP200 pillow blocks for the same bore. One spare insert covers all housing formats — cartridge and non-cartridge — for that bore size, simplifying spare parts inventory.

〰️

Rubber-Mounted Vibration Isolation

Rubber-mounted variants (RSB, RCSA/RCSB, RSAPP/RSBPP) vulcanise a compliant rubber element between the bearing and the housing. The rubber attenuates vibration, absorbs radial shock loads, and accommodates minor misalignment that would otherwise shorten bearing life on a rigid mount.

🔧

Four Locking Styles

Setscrew (UC insert, bidirectional), eccentric collar (NA insert, unidirectional self-tightening), concentric collar (UE insert, 360° bidirectional at high speed), and adapter sleeve (UK+H, no shaft damage) — the same four locking mechanisms available in standard pillow blocks and flanges.

📏

Metric and Inch Housing Standards

UCFC and UCFCX series follow metric housing dimensions; UCFCS and UCFCSX follow inch-based housing dimensions. When an existing machine frame has inch-standard bores and bolt patterns, UCFCS drops in without re-machining the frame.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
▶ What is the difference between a cartridge bearing unit and a standard pillow block or flange unit?

A standard pillow block (UCP200) or flange unit (UCF200) is a self-contained housing that bolts onto the surface of a machine frame. A cartridge bearing unit (UCFC200, UCC200) is designed to be installed into a bore machined in the machine frame or casting itself — the housing becomes part of the machine structure rather than an external component. This reduces the external envelope of the bearing position and eliminates the housing foot or flange plate from the external machine surface. The insert bearing and locking mechanism are the same UC-family components used in standard pillow blocks and flanges.

▶ What is the difference between flange cartridge (UCFC) and cylindrical cartridge (UCC) formats?

A flange cartridge unit (UCFC200) has a square or rectangular flange plate with a round precision pilot on the back face. The pilot locates the unit concentrically in a matching bore and the flange bolts lock it in place, allowing easy removal and reinstallation. A cylindrical cartridge unit (UCC200) has a plain cylindrical OD with no flange plate — it is held in a round bore by interference fit, a retaining grub screw, or a circlip. The cylindrical format gives a smaller external footprint and a fully recessed bearing position, but is less easily removed than the flanged type.

▶ When should I use a rubber-mounted bearing unit instead of a standard cartridge unit?

Rubber-mounted bearing units (RSB205, RCSA200/RCSB200, RSAPP200/RSBPP200) are specified wherever the drive generates significant vibration or impact that would be transmitted to the machine frame through a rigid bearing mount — vibratory screens, agricultural machinery over rough terrain, conveyor drives subject to load impacts, and any position where premature bearing failure on a rigid mount is a recurring problem. The rubber element attenuates vibration transmission, absorbs radial shock loads, and accommodates minor misalignment. They are not interchangeable with standard rigid cartridge units and require the machine bore to be sized for the rubber-mounted housing OD.

▶ Are cartridge bearing unit inserts interchangeable with standard flange and pillow block inserts?

Yes. The UC-family insert bearing in UCFC200 is the same as the insert used in UCF200 (4-bolt flange), UCFL200 (2-bolt oval flange), and UCP200 (pillow block) for the same bore size. NAFC200 uses the same NA eccentric collar insert as NAF200; UEFC200 uses the same UE concentric collar insert as UEF200; UKFC200+H uses the same UK tapered bore insert as UKF200+H. One insert spare covers both cartridge and non-cartridge housing formats for the same bore.

▶ When should I use UCFCS200 (inch-based) instead of UCFC200 (metric) at the same bore size?

UCFCS200 uses housing dimensions derived from inch fractions — pilot diameter, flange plate dimensions, and bolt-hole positions correspond to inch-standard cartridge bearing positions. When the machine frame bore and bolt pattern are already machined to inch-standard dimensions, UCFCS200 drops in directly without re-boring or re-drilling. For new machine designs in metric, UCFC200 is the standard choice. UCFCSX00 is the medium-duty version of the same inch-based housing with a higher-rated UCX insert.

▶ What is the pilot on the back of a flange cartridge unit and why does it matter?

The pilot is a raised circular register on the back face of the flange cartridge housing that fits into a matching bore in the machine frame to an h7/H7 or similar transition fit. It locates the housing concentrically relative to the shaft before the flange bolts are tightened, eliminating dependence on bolt-hole clearance for bearing position accuracy. It also enables repeatable reinstallation — when a cartridge bearing is replaced, the new unit locates in exactly the same position as the original without re-alignment.
