A hanger bearing unit is a mounted bearing designed for overhead or inverted mounting — the housing bolts to the underside of a beam, overhead frame, or ceiling-mounted structure with the mounting face pointing upward and the shaft running horizontally below. This is the opposite orientation to a standard pillow block, which mounts with the base on a horizontal surface below the shaft.

Hanger bearings are common in overhead conveyor systems, cross-transfer drives, ceiling-mounted fan shafts, and any drive arrangement where the shaft must be supported from above and a conventional base-mounted pillow block cannot be used. The UC-family insert bearings used in hanger units are the same as those in standard pillow blocks and flange units, giving full insert interchangeability for the same bore size.

Mounting Orientation — Hanger vs Pillow Block

▲ Standard Pillow Block (UCP200)

Mounting base faces downward. Bolted to horizontal surface below the shaft. Shaft runs above the base. Used when the machine frame is below the shaft centreline.

▼ Hanger Bearing Unit (UCHA200)

Mounting face faces upward. Bolted to underside of overhead beam or frame. Shaft runs below the housing. Used when the supporting structure is above the shaft centreline.

■ Insert Interchangeability

UCHA200 uses the same UC insert as UCP200. UEHA200 uses the same UE insert as UEP200. UCHE200 uses the UCH extended inner ring insert. One insert type covers both hanger and pillow block positions for the same bore.

All Hanger Bearing Unit Series

Three series cover the full range of locking requirements for overhead shaft support. All use cast iron housings with the same bolt-hole geometry for interchangeable mounting positions on the same overhead frame structure.

Series Comparison

All three series use the same cast iron hanger housing with identical bolt-hole dimensions. The insert bearing and locking mechanism are the only differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ What is a hanger bearing unit and how does it differ from a pillow block?

A pillow block (UCP200) mounts with its base on a horizontal surface below the shaft, supporting the shaft from underneath. A hanger bearing unit (UCHA200) mounts with its face on the underside of an overhead beam or frame above the shaft, supporting the shaft from above. The shaft centreline is below the mounting face rather than above the base. This inverted orientation is required when the supporting machine structure is above the shaft — such as overhead conveyors, cross-transfer systems, ceiling-mounted fan drives, and material handling equipment where a base-mounted pillow block cannot reach the shaft from below.

▶ Are hanger bearing inserts interchangeable with standard pillow block inserts?

Yes. UCHA200 uses the same UC series wide inner ring insert as UCP200 pillow blocks for equivalent bore sizes. UEHA200 uses the same UE concentric collar insert as UEP200. This means the same insert spare part covers both hanger and pillow block positions for the same bore size on the same machine, simplifying spare parts inventory. UCHE200 uses the UCH extended inner ring insert, which is specific to the UCHE housing format.

▶ When should I use UEHA200 concentric collar instead of UCHA200 setscrew in a hanger position?

Use UEHA200 when the shaft speed is high enough that setscrew retention in UCHA200 is marginal, or when the overhead drive reverses direction during operation or maintenance. The concentric collar of the UE insert applies 360° uniform clamping pressure with no eccentric mass, producing no imbalance force at any operating speed. It releases symmetrically in both directions, making it suitable for reversing overhead drives where an eccentric collar would release under reversal. For standard-speed unidirectional overhead drives, UCHA200 setscrew is the standard and simpler choice.

▶ What does the extended inner ring in UCHE200 provide that the standard UC insert does not?

The UCH extended inner ring insert has a wider inner ring than the standard UC insert at the same bore size. This wider inner ring provides a longer shaft contact surface for the setscrew, which can improve retention under vibration and gives more axial flexibility in shaft positioning relative to the housing. It is particularly useful in overhead positions where the shaft may have a small amount of axial float and the wider inner ring provides more tolerance to axial shaft movement without the shaft moving out of the setscrew engagement zone.

▶ Can hanger bearing units be used in orientations other than overhead (inverted)?

Yes. Hanger bearing units can be mounted in any orientation where the mounting face is on the upper or side surface of the housing rather than the base: inverted (overhead beam), wall-mounted with shaft running vertically, or at intermediate angles on inclined frame structures. The insert bearing self-aligns to compensate for minor angular misalignment between shaft and housing regardless of mounting orientation. For any mounting orientation, verify that the grease fitting is accessible for re-lubrication and that the grease does not migrate away from the bearing under gravity in the installed position.

▶ What is the MOQ for hanger bearing units?

Standard parts: quantity-based MOQ per model number. New-client samples: 1–5 pcs at sample price for first-time buyers. Multi-model orders: aggregate orders of USD 1,500 or more across models accepted. Retail (1–2 pcs): not accepted. Engineering drawings required before order confirmation — catalogue dimensions for reference only.
